Country styled houses are getting more attention these days. Earlier, people used to look for modern houses, which according to them was the perfect one. But the concept is slowly changing. People are attracted by country styled sub-urban houses, surrounded by a few large shade trees and a wraparound porch providing a warm feeling. Today, you can find many designers who provide good, efficient country house plans. But still there are certain things which you need to consider while buying one.
Country houses are usually built on flat grounds that might be near creeks, streams or rivers.  Check to see if the home has ever flooded.  If it is in a floodplain, it is almost sure that you will get flooded at some point of time. The layout usually includes a big kitchen though the rooms are small and lack closet space. Also the ceilings are usually high. The heating was done earlier using wood stoves. Check if you could convert this into a coal stove.
The plumbing of the houses has also to be checked to see if they have been maintained well.  Old plumbing means there is a possibility of lead in the water. If the tap water is discolored or has grit in it, it may mean that a pipe has deteriorated, which may mean a costly repair. The wiring also has to be hazard proof. Use circuit breakers instead of old fuse box. Duct based heating and air conditioning may prove costly as it is difficult to retro fit traditional old plaster walls with ductworks and wires concealed.
Also have a home inspection done. This will give a thorough check of the home, inside and out, including the basement or crawlspace and the roof.  You will be informed of any problems, small and large.  Also, have the home inspected for bugs and critters. So make sure that you spend your money wisely.
